The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
